Facts and figures about the
discovery of the Mambo Footprints.
In the article from East African
7-9-09 is stated: "The discovery was made on April 8 this year by a team led
by Prof Edward Gerry Mgema"
Is this really the truth?
In the article is the question of the
"Mandala Hominid footprints" after the name of the area Madala in Mambo
village. The extra "n" must be a mistake.
The footprints are situated along a
public footpath in a rock that is not covered and locally it was common
known they were there. Only
nobody knew the value of them. Nobody? except Mr. Hussein Muslim Chombo,
also called Ndege, born in the nearby village Tema.
He kept it in
silence until he saw a good opportunity to utilize the footprints for the
development of his
region. This came visible when the eco lodge MamboViewPoint was established
in Mambo which had also the goal to contribute to the development of the
region and it became clear that the footprints would attract a lot of
visitors and would give significant
employment.
After visiting the site together with the
owners of MamboViewPoint, Marion Neidt and Herman Erdtsieck (in the article
Herman is
named as "investor" without any notice of
the relation to the footprints) From then the threesome were looking for a
scientist who could confirm the value of the footprints. Until they met
professor Mgema, who originally did not believe something like that was
possible until he saw the pictures and and at last came to
visit the
site.
Since then several expeditions were made
together with other scientists
like
archaeologist Jumanne Gekora
Maburi. Also
pictures were
taken and measurement were done on behalf of prof Mgema
until the district commissioner of
Lushoto prohibited to go to the site any longer in expectation of further
scientific investigation which is
happening now.
The threesome really hope the further
development of the footprints
will contribute to the
prosperity of
Mambo, the Usambara mountains / Lushoto and Tanzania and they trust in the
Tanzanian
government to protect the place and to
develop the project for the benefit of the people of Tanzania.
